How to Vacuum seal a Hybrid Mattress
Before we get started, it’s essential to check if your hybrid mattress’ warranty has disclaimers on DIY vacuum sealing. This is because DIY vacuum sealing your mattress may affect the structure of your mattress, and your warranty might not cover the damages.
Another thing, if your hybrid mattress is seven or more years old, compressing it might make it lumpy. Or even worse, it might not spring back into its full shape when you unpack.
Nevertheless, if you’re sure it’s safe to DIY vacuum seal your mattress, here are the steps you need to take.
Step 1: Gather all your supplies
To vacuum seal your hybrid mattress, you will need the following things:
- Vacuum bag
- Vacuum cleaner
- Plastic mattress bag
- Duct tape
- Ratchet straps
- Box to store your mattress ( optional)
Also, if possible, have a friend/s or a partner to help you. This makes the process easier.
Step 2: Prepare your mattress.
Remove all your bedding from the mattress— including the mattress protector. Then vacuum it to remove all the dust and loose dirt. The last thing you probably want is to move with it into your new house.
Step 3: Bag the mattress
Before slipping your mattress into a mattress bag, ensure that it matches your mattress dimensions. For instance, if you have a queen-size mattress, you should choose a queen-size plastic bag. Otherwise, if you choose a bigger plastic, it will have extra plastic and less space.
Once you’re sure your bag is the right size, you can slip your hybrid mattress in the bag with the help of a friend. However, if you’re alone, you could lean your mattress against the wall and place a bag on top. You can then slide the bag down to voter the whole mattress.
Step 4: Seal the bag
Now that the mattress is in the bag seal it with the zipper and reinforce the edges with duct tape. This will ensure that air won’t escape during the sealing process.
Step 5: Cut the valve hole and place the valve.
Once the bag is sealed, you will need to place the valve on the plastic cover to get the measurements that you will cut. Once you’ve cut it, you can put the valve through with the nozzle facing up and reinforce it with duct tape to keep it airtight.
Step 6: Turn on the vacuum, then roll the mattress
Attach the vacuum hose to the valve, then turn on the vacuum. To get the best results, you can gently press on the surface of the mattress while vacuuming to help flatten the mattress.
Once it’s flat, you can roll the mattress while it’s horizontal. Also, keep the vacuum on while rolling your mattress to keep air from getting in the bag.
Step 7: Secure the mattress
After you’ve rolled up your bag, you will need to secure the mattress with Ratchet straps to keep it from unravelling. Besides that, you can reinforce it with duct tape that is not overly sticky— then store it in a box.
